Models projecting the fate of fish populations under climate change need to be based on valid physiological mechanisms ArchiMer
Lefevre, Sjannie; Mckenzie, David J.; Nilsson, Goran E..
Some recent modelling papers projecting smaller fish sizes and catches in a warmer future are based on erroneous assumptions regarding (i) the scaling of gills with body mass and (ii) the energetic cost of 'maintenance'. Assumption (i) posits that insurmountable geometric constraints prevent respiratory surface areas from growing as fast as body volume. It is argued that these constraints explain allometric scaling of energy metabolism, whereby larger fishes have relatively lower mass-specific metabolic rates. Assumption (ii) concludes that when fishes reach a certain size, basal oxygen demands will not be met, because of assumption (i). We here demonstrate unequivocally, by applying accepted physiological principles with reference to the existing...

Modulation des performances cardio-respiratoires du bar europeen (Dicentrarchus labrax) par l'apport d'acides gras alimentaires: une etude integree des effets cardiaques in vivo au courant calcique de type L des myocytes ventriculaires ArchiMer
Chatelier, Aurelien.
Diet quality, and particularly fatty acids composition, is an environmental factor that is emerging as a significant source of physiological diversity. Indeed, numerous recent studies show that the fatty acid composition of the diet influences cardiac and metabolic performances of organisms. Because it is involved in the control and regulation of internal flow of matter and energy, the heart is believed to play a central role in environmental adaptation in fish. Within the double context of adaptation of individuals to their ecological niche and species evolution, understanding sources of interindividual variability and particularly fatty acid influences on the cardiorespiratory system is essential. The objective of the study was to investigate in the sea...

Mutation of Trp-574-Leu ALS gene confers resistance of radish biotypes to iodosulfuron and imazethapyr herbicides Agronomy
Cechin, Joanei; Vargas, Leandro; Agostinetto, Dirceu; Lamego, Fabiane Pinto; Mariani, Franciele; Dal Magro, Taísa.
Acetolactate synthase inhibitors are the main group of herbicides used in winter crops in Southern Brazil where their intensive use has selected for herbicide-resistant biotypes of radish. The resistance affects the efficacy of herbicides, and identifying the resistance mechanism involved is important for defining management strategies. The aim of this study was to elucidate the resistance mechanism of radish biotypes by quantifying the enzyme activity, ALS gene sequencing and evaluating the response of biotypes to iodosulfuron and imazethapyr herbicide application after treatment with a cytochrome P450 monooxygenase inhibitor. The susceptible (B1) and resistant (B4 and B13) biotypes were from wheat fields in the Northwest of Rio Grande do Sul State. The...

Neutrotoxic effects of fructose administration in rat brain: implications for fructosemia Anais da ABC (AABC)
Macongonde,Ernesto A.; Costa,Naithan L.F.; Ferreira,Bruna K.; Biella,Mairis S.; Frederico,Marisa J.S.; Oliveira,Marcos R. de; Ávila Júnior,Silvio; Silva,Fátima R.M.B.; Ferreira,Gustavo C.; Streck,Emilio L.; Schuck,Patrícia F..
Fructose accumulates in tissue and body fluids of patients affected by hereditary fructose intolerance (HFI), a disorder caused by the deficiency of aldolase B. We investigated the effect of acute fructose administration on the biochemical profile and on the activities of the Krebs cycle enzymes in the cerebral cortex of young rats. Rats received a subcutaneous injection of NaCl (0.9 %; control group) or fructose solution (5 μmol/g; treated group). Twelve or 24 h after the administration, the animals were euthanized and the cerebral cortices were isolated. Peripheral blood (to obtain the serum) and cerebral spinal fluid (CSF) from the animals were also collected. It was observed that albumin levels were decreased and cholesterol levels were increased in...

New approaches, development, and improvement of methodologies for the assessment of B-vitamin requirements in dairy cows R. Bras. Zootec.
Girard,Christiane L..
ABSTRACT Studies on B-vitamin requirements of cattle, conducted more than 60 years ago, concluded that mature ruminants do not require B-vitamin supplements because the amounts of vitamins provided by the diet and synthesized by the ruminal microflora were sufficient to prevent emergence of deficiency symptoms. As a result, the impact of subclinical deficiency on maintenance of normal and efficient metabolism has been disregarded and very little research effort has been devoted at defining dairy cow requirements for B vitamins. However, emergence of deficiency symptoms is the last stage of the deficiency; deficiency appears as soon as the supply is inferior to the needs, leading to a loss of metabolic efficiency. As B vitamins play critical roles in...

Nutrient reduction in rations with phytase for growing pigs R. Bras. Zootec.
Rodrigues,Valéria Vânia; Cantarelli,Vinícius de Souza; Amaral,Nikolas de Oliveira; Zangeronimo,Márcio Gilberto; Brito,Jeronimo Ávito Gonçalves de; Fialho,Elias Tadeu.
Two experiments were conducted to evaluate the performance, the energy and nutrient balance and economic viability of production of growing pigs fed diets with reduced levels and phytase. In experiment 1, 60 barrows and gilts (initial weight 25 ± 1.72 kg) were housed in a randomized block design with three diets, ten replicates and two animals per experimental unit (one male and one female). One of the diets was formulated with a reduced level with phytase and evaluated in comparison to a positive-control diet that was formulated according to the nutritional recommendations for animals of this breed, and a negative-control diet without phytase. The different diets did not affect feed intake, but the diet with phytase promoted better final weight, daily...

Nutrition phosphoree chez Chondrus crispus (Rhodophycees) ArchiMer
Chopin, T; Floc'H, J; Bodeau, B; Penot, M.
Phosphorated nutrition of the red alga Chondrus crispus Stackh. is studied is two morphologically very dissimilar forms of the thallus. Phosphorus measurements, which were monthly carried out at different parts of the alga, showed first that the distribution of this element is not homogeneous along the thallus, and second that seasonal variations occur. It is suggested that the classical polymorphism of the species can be taken into account as concerns its physiology. Besides, from absorption and exsorption experiments which were performed with super(32)P as a tracer, it is shown that the high concentration factor of phosphorus in the alga as compared to the environmental seawater (up to 17.9 x 10 super(4)) can be explained as an effect of metabolic process.

Oral insulin improves metabolic parameters in high fat diet fed rats Anais da ABC (AABC)
LIPINSKI,LEANDRO C.; KMETIUK,LOUISE B.; MATHIAS,PAULO C.F.; MALTA,ANANDA; FAVERO,GIOVANI M.; RIBEIRO,TATIANE A.; TOLEDO,ALCEU; NETTO,MARIO R. MONTEMOR; RODRIGUES,MARCOS R.S..
ABSTRACT Introduction/Aim: The gut has shown to have a pivotal role on the pathophysiology of metabolic disease. Food stimulation of distal intestinal segments promotes enterohormones secretion influencing insulin metabolism. In diabetic rats, oral insulin has potential to change intestinal epithelium behavior. This macromolecule promotes positive effects on laboratorial metabolic parameters and decreases diabetic intestinal hypertrophy. This study aims to test if oral insulin can influence metabolic parameters and intestinal weight in obese non-diabetic rats. Methods: Twelve weeks old Wistar rats were divided in 3 groups: control (CTRL) standard chow group; high fat diet low carbohydrates group (HFD) and HFD plus daily oral 20U insulin gavage (HFD+INS)....

Oxygen and carbon dioxide fluxes at the water-sediment interface of a tropical lagoon ArchiMer
Boucher, Guy; Clavier, Jacques; Garrigue, Claire.
Oxygen demand, carbon dioxide release and total alkalinity shift were calculated from changes in oxygen, pH and total alkalinity produced by bottom dark incubations at the water-sediment interface of the 3 bottom types identified in a southwest lagoon in New Caledonia. Total sediment oxygen demand (AO?) was corrected from nonbioloyical oxygen demand (NBOD) In order to obtain the apparent biological activity (AOlO)T.o tal carbon dioxide flux (AC02)w as corrected from total alkalinity shift in order to estimate organic carbon processes. The resulting mean carbon dioxide flux (ACOzO= 2.58 mm01 m-' h-', SE = 0.12) exceeded biological oxygen demand (AO," = 1.60 mm01 m-' h-', SE = 0.08). The highly significant ratio estimates from functional regression lines of...

Paes,L.S.; Borges,J.P.; Cunha,F.A.; Souza,M.G.C.; Cyrino,F.Z.G.A.; Bottino,D.A.; Bouskela,E.; Farinatti,P..
This study compared strategies to equalize the volume of aerobic exercise performed with different intensities by Wistar rats, based on the distance covered during exercise bouts and energy expenditure (EE, isocaloric sessions) obtained from oxygen uptake (V̇O2) or respiratory exchange ratio (RER). Thirty-three male rats (270.5±12.8 g) underwent maximal exercise tests to determine V̇O2 reserve (V̇O2R), being randomly assigned to three groups: moderate-intensity continuous exercise at speed corresponding to 50% V̇O2R (MIC; n=11); high-intensity continuous exercise at 80% V̇O2R (HIC; n=11); and high-intensity intermittent exercise (HII; n=11) at 60% V̇O2R (3 min) and 80% V̇O2R (4 min). Exercise duration was calculated individually to elicit EE of 5 kcal in...

Physiological responses of anti-predation in prey fish to the threat of piscivorous fish in different underwater visibility conditions Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Fiori,Leandro Fabrício; Figueiredo,Bruno R. S.; Pavanello,Audrei; Alves,Vander Silva; Mathias,Paulo Cezar de Freitas; Benedito,Evanilde.
ABSTRACT Considering that the anti-predation behaviour of prey fishes may vary with predator hunting strategy, we experimentally investigated the physiological responses of Astyanax bimaculatus (Linnaeus, 1758) shoals to the presence of two piscivorous fish species with different hunting modes: sit-and-wait and active pursuit. In addition, we evaluated the influence of underwater visibility conditions on the interaction between predator and prey. We tested the hypotheses that: (i) prey plasma cortisol and glucose levels vary according to piscivore hunting strategy, and (ii) no reduction in plasma glucose and cortisol levels takes place in turbid environments due to the inability of prey to accurately recognise predators by non-visual signals. The results...

Physiological responses of growing pigs to high ambient temperature and/or inflammatory challenges R. Bras. Zootec.
Campos,Paulo Henrique Reis Furtado; Le Floc'h,Nathalie; Noblet,Jean; Renaudeau,David.
ABSTRACT Global warming is one of the major environmental threats facing the world in the 21st century. This fact will have a significant impact on pig production due to its direct effects on welfare, health, and performance of pigs. Besides, the effects of high temperatures will presumably become more important over the next decades due to the development of pig production in developing countries mainly located in tropical and subtropical areas, where animals are often exposed to ambient temperatures above their thermal comfort zone. Furthermore, pigs reared in tropical areas are often confronted to sanitary challenges including poor hygiene conditions, lack of respect for sanitary rules, and pathogens. This results in the stimulation of the immune system...

Ploidy influences on metabolic substrate deposition of rainbow trout Animal Sciences
Gomes, Aline Dal`Olio; Vieira, Vanessa Aparecida Rocha Oliveira; Tabata, Yara Aiko; Takahashi, Neuza Sumico; Moreira, Renata Guimarães; Ribeiro, Cristiele Silva.
Triploid fish are usually sterile. Thus, the energy and nutrients intended for sexual maturation may be available to enhance flesh quality and physical growth. The present study aimed to investigate differences in the metabolic substrates, lipids and proteins, between storage tissues from diploid and triploid female rainbow trout. Monthly, metabolic substrates were quantified in liver, muscle, and ovaries, which were collected during the first reproductive cycle. In general, it was possible to identify a seasonal and similar deposition of metabolites in different tissues of 2n and 3n females, mainly at early stages of gonadal maturation. However, from the stages 5-6, the ovaries showed great differences between ploidies, with higher concentration of lipids...
